After such an amazing time in the Yellowstone National Park, it was time to head back, more or less in a straight line across the US Midwest (South Dakota, Minnesota, etc.)
After some impressive canyons and very steep roads in the Buffalo Gap National area, this leg of the trip took us to Rapid City and Keystone, home of the Mount Rushmore memorial. To be honest I was at first skeptical about such a touristic stop on the way back, but it was actually very informative and the perfect mix of historical information about the progressive consolidation of the US through time, and of the US Presidents who made this happen.
From there on, the roads became straight again, and if it were not for the extremely violent thunderstorms and hail (I had never seen anything like that anywhere before) I could have said it was a bit boring. But the skies, clouds and landscapes were all the more impressive because of this extreme weather:
I hope you enjoy some of the photos, you can see the entire trip by following me on instagram where I posted all the landscapes as I was taking them, and by checking out the previous posts; Part I, II, III, and IV!
